Artist Statement
With portraiture at the forefront of my practice, I explore the interconnectedness of people, and the dynamics of different relationships. Working predominantly within painting, fibers, glass, and illustration, I explore how these materials, which are often at great odds, can come together and form intimate relationships. With interest in exploring how people relate and connect to one another, I begin this study by observing those relationships closest to myself. I examine reference images of bygone memories from my own familial, platonic, and romantic loves, and by allowing my subconscious to take over, I select photos of those who I am calling to reconnect to without realizing. Spending this quality time to create a portrait of a loved one allows me a new opportunity to connect with that individual. In obsessing over replicating each detail within an image, I am able to get another chance to be with these fading memories and thoughts. Each work becomes a representation of not only the connection I have to the person depicted, but also how I see our connection as it directly influences my own quality. The altered lens of documented memory is integrally related to the processing of these subjects. Yes I am able to spend time with these individuals, but will it always be a depiction of them as represented through the lens, cataloged and curated digitally? How does this speak to the way they are remembered? How does a memory change each time it is thought of? With continued exploration of these subjects, I hope to bring clarity to some of these thoughts within myself and how they resonate with others. My work is representational of my own life and experiences, but they exist equally as vehicles for others to reflect on their own connections.

Inspiration and Process
My exploration of human connection begins with observing the relationships closest to me. I examine reference images of bygone memories from my familial, platonic, and romantic love.
Allowing my subconscious to take over, I select photos of those I call to reconnect to without realizing it. Spending this quality time to create a portrait of a loved one allows me a new opportunity to connect with that individual.
In obsessing over replicating each detail within an image, I can get another chance to be with these fading memories and thoughts.
The Deeper Meaning
Each work becomes a representation of not only the connection I have to the person depicted but also how I see our connection as it directly influences my quality. The altered lens of documented memory is integrally related to the processing of these subjects.
Yes, I can spend time with these individuals through my art, but will it always be a depiction of them as represented through the lens, cataloged and curated digitally? How does this speak to the way they are remembered? How does a memory change each time it is thought of?
